About Us & Our Waterproofing historyGrailCoat is one of the first products ever developed to successfully modify cement with acrylic copolymer technology. During the initial stages of this new technology frontier, cement and aggregate blends, modified with acrylic copolymers were directed toward the food processing industry. The outstanding performance characteristics of this new acrylic modified cement material lent itself perfectly for use on floors and walls, in meat and dairy processing plants where copious quantities of water and other less pleasant exposures were constant. Constant water and steam cleaning, plus forklift and steel wheel cart traffic caused ordinary concrete to fail very quickly. However, with the introduction of cement modified with acrylics, a new era of incredibly durable maintenance and concrete repair technology was born. During the early 1970s GrailCoat continued its natural evolutionary progression into a host of other viable applications and markets. During this phase an important breakthrough occurred - the ability to blend acrylic polymer, cement, and aggregate, fluid enough to be sprayed applied as well as trowel applied. (Please refer to application instructions and your GrailCoat representative for proper use of spray equipment). Because of the high solids characteristics and the minimal amount of water in the mix, shrinkage cracks - due to volume displacement - were eliminated. More importantly, very little tension was created at the bond between the GrailCoat and concrete interface. Therefore the bond strength between the GrailCoat and the cement was greater than the cohesive strength of the concrete itself. Yet, expansion and contraction rates of GrailCoat were equal to concrete, causing complete thermal compatibility with the concrete. Because of these remarkable breakthroughs and because of the increased fluidity of the GrailCoat material, many new surfaces and application possibilities began to naturally develop for GrailCoat. GrailCoat has been successfully used in applications from Canada to the equator. Because of its unique formula, GrailCoat can not only waterproof, repair and decorate/finish masonry surfaces, but can also be used to waterproof wood, particle board, and oriented strand board (OSB). On steel, it provides excellent corrosion protection and unparalleled abrasion resistance. GrailCoat has three coating products, the original GrailCoat, DuraSurf is used primarily for metal applications. GrailCoat DuraFlex, a more flexible, but cut resistant material is used on Insulating Concrete Forms, over decorative foam, for roof decks, and balcony walking decks, and GrailCoat SuperFlex, a very flexible coating, is used is used on wood substrates for exterior wall applications. See our distributor information page if you are interested in distributing GrailCoat in your area. |
